MAYORAL ELECTION AT OTOROHANGA

PETITION FOR NULLITY DECLARATION (New Zealana Presr Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 25 Decision was reserved by Mr Stewart Hardy, S.M.. at Otorohanga when he heard a petition, lodged by 10 electors, to have the Otorohanga Mayoral election held on November 17 declared void on the ground of irregularities. The Magistrate indicated that he would give his decision on February 8. F. L. Phillips, the successful candidate in the election, filed an objection to lhe petition. At the hearing evidence was given by the petitioners on their allegations that the returning officer had failed to accept any votes by declaration. and that he had also stated that, if any votes by declaration came into his hands, they would not be counted. Another ground advanced was that the name of a candidate who had retired from the contest had not been properly erased fromjthe voting paper.
