Peers Discuss Film Poster
Peers today spent a few minutes in the House of Lords discussing whether a film poster of Miss Anita Ekberg was obscene or not. A Labour peer, Lord Lucas, complaining of vulgarity in the American film industry, objected to the poster being plastered all over the West End of London. “It is that of a reclining figure, so scantily clad as to be really vulgar,” he said. He urged that the poster should be removed in the interest of public taste and decency. The Government spokesman. Lord Mancroft, said that he had asked other peers for their opinions. One had agreed with Lord Lucas, but said that he was “rather a spoilsport.” Three said that it was “very nice,” and seven asked: "Who is Miss Ekberg?”. “One man’s meat is another man’s Ekberg,” Lord Mancroft commented. But he said that he would draw the local authorities' attention to the poster and see if Lord Lucas could be helped.—London, December 21.
