MURRAY HALBERG AT RUGBY PARK

A modest and unobtrusive spectator at the weekly athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday was the Olympic 1500 metres runner, Murray Halberg. He was passing through Christchurch on his way back to Auckland after taking a quiet hitch-hiking holiday on the West Coast to relax from the strain of his long buildup for the Olympic Games. Halberg, who declined an invitation to compete in the mile race, said he was now ready for training again, but he did not think that he would take competition quite so seriously this season. It was likely that he would take a course at an American university next year, said Halberg, but before being finally accepted he would have to sit an entrance examination.
