The first national servicemen are due to be called up on April 1, 1957. The hill was passed by a majority of the Bundesrat (Upper House). The Bundestag (Lower House) has already passed it, and the bill will enter into force when it is signed by the president. Dr. Theodor Heuss. National servicemen may volunteer, under the Bill, for 18 months’ service in which case they can choose their arm of service.
By the end of 1957, there are to be at least 120,000 men under arms.
