UNITY FOR GERMANY
Discussion By U.N. Planned (N.Z Press Association—Copyright) BONN, December 22. The West German Chancellor. Dr. Adenauer, said today he wanted the problem of German reunification placed before the United Nations at a favourable time. He told a press conference that his Government had intended to ask friendly nations to raise the problem in the United Nations some months ago. “We renounced this because the Near East problem became so acute that we saw no favourable atmosphere for a solution of the German problem,” Dr. Adenauer said.
The intention to have the problem discussed remained. “We await a favourable moment to undertake the step,” he said. Dr. Adenauer also said, answering a question, that West Germany would help in any Western scheme to help Egypt build the Aswan Dam.
“I am, and always have been, of the opinion that for the Egyptian people a project such as the Aswan Dam is of the greatest importance.” He said he hoped that the West would revert to the question of assistance to Egypt once the confusion over Suez had died down.
“West Germany will certainly not refuse its assistance,” Dr. Adenauer said.
