HAZLETT GOLD CUP

SHAHWAN HAS BEST PROSPECTS SECOND DAY’S FIELDS FOR WINGATUI (From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, December 23. Shahwan, and his half-sister, Ma Reine, are expected to dominate the finish of the James Hazlett Gold Cup, the principal attraction on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s cup meeting on Wednesday. Shahwan, one of the two three-year-olds in the field, has an unbeaten record of two wins on the course, and he may run out a mile a shade too solidly for Ma Reine, which will carry 91b more. Shahwan was near his best when he won the Dunedin Guineas in September and reached peak form at Trentham a month later when he won the Harcourt Stakes after running second to Passive in the Wellington Guineas. Mr H. D. Greenwood's Phorozshah colt was not at his best when he finished an undistinguished third in the New Zealand Derby, but he now looks ready for one of his peak performances, and the best of the others may be unable to cope with one of his dogged challenges. Ma Reine has fashioned a first-class record as a sprinter, and has won at a mile in strong company. Like her half-brother, she will be making her first appearance at the meeting, but she made a very good impression in a gallop with three stablemates on the course proper after Saturday’s racing at Wingatui. Shahwan and Ma Reine are both from the Salmagundi mare. Excellency, which won the James Hazlett Gold Cup twice during her notable career. The best of the others will be Silver King, whose best form as a miler has been of a high standard. The double will be on the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap and the Flying Handicap. Cheerio, which was sore after cooling out on Saturday, has been scratched for the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, the first leg. The Baffles gelding had swelling in the near front joint this morning, and his Invercargill trainer, D. V. Pankhurst, has decided to take no risks with him. Overboard has been withdrawn from the James Hazlett Gold Cup, and will race in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap in which he will be ridden by E. G. Low.
