YEMAN’S IMPRESSIVE WIN PASSIVE OUTCLASSED BY SOMERSET FAIR (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 22. The promising young stayer, Yeman, galloped his way into strong favour for the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie on Wednesday when he outfinished a good field in the Coronation Handicap, the first leg at Avondale, yesterday. Yeman was well back in the early running. He improved gradually until he was in a striking position at the turn, and he had the race in safe keeping with three-quarters of a furlong to run. Black Amber (third) and Sombrero (fifth) were the most impressive of the other cup candidates. Somerset Fair scored a comfortable victory in the feature event, the Challenge Stakes. He made all the pace and strode right away in the straight to beat the favourite. Passive, by five lengths. Belle Rosa won the second leg, the Shorts Handicap, and the double dividend was £4O Ils for £l. The weather was fine and the track perfect. The totalisator handled £124,700 10s (including £15,941 10s on doubles). There was no corresponding day last year. Results:— KINGSLAND HIGH-WEIGHT, Of £BOO. One mile and three furlongs. 1.
