CONTROVERSIES OVER FILM SHOWINGS

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) CHICAGO, December 20. The planned showing of two controversial films has been cancelled in two mid-western cities.

The management of the Esquire Theatre in Indianapolis dropped its booking of “Baby Doll” in the face of a mounting controversy. Cardinal Spellman, the Roman Catholic 'Archbishop of New York, recently exhorted Catholics not to see the pictue, “under pain of sin.” The National Legion of Decency, a Roman Catholic film review organisation, earlier had condemned the film.

Officials of a Chicago television station cancelled the showing of the film “Martin Luther,” set for Friday. There have been protests from Roman Catholic laymen. The news of the cancellation brought a counter protest from the Church Federation of Chicago, a Protestant organisation.

The protest said in part: “This lastminute reversal of the station’s carefully considered programme judgment can only be interpreted as surrendering to pressure from sources who seemingly want to suppress certain pages of history.”
