OPEN-CAST MINE FLOODED
HEAVY LOSS OF EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS MAY HAVE TO STOP Water from the ' Waihao river entered the open-cast mine operated by Taylors, Ltd., at Glenlogan, near Waihao Forks, during the recent flooding, and it is feared the mine will be closed as a result. / Tractors and a bulldozer were removed before the river broke a floodbank, but drills, pumps and electrical equipment were submergad, resulting in heavy loss. About £lO,OOO was. spent in development of the mine after test bores in 1953 revealed a seam of 30ft and a possible 100,000 tons of coal in a 70-acre claim. The mine was expected to reach an output of 100 tons a day.
