REFUGEES FROM HUNGARY
ACCOMMODATION IN PRIVATE HOMES 50 MORE TO ARRIVE ON JANUARY 3 The fifteen Hungarian refugees who arrived in Christchurch on Tuesday are all staying in private homes, and no official contacts have since been made with them. No entertainment has been organised for the refugees. Officials consider that they should be left free to adapt themselves as quickly as possible to normal living in the country which has adopted them. None of the men has begun work yet, but all are assured of employment in a Government department which has been short of workers. The Hungarians have apparently made a good impression, because a woman who took one of the refugees into her home telephoned Mr R. H. Bell, of the immigration section of the Labour Department, to say: "Thank you so much for sending such a nice young man to>me.” Three aircraft are expected with more refugees at Auckland on January 3, and the Christchurch allocation of 50 men will probably be flown south. So far, accommodation is assured for 40 men. Homes are still wanted for 10 single men.
