TROTTING Next Time Favoured In Motukarara First Leg

Next Time, a good winner in the Cheviot Handicap at Rangiora last Saturday, is favourite for the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club Handicap, the main race and first leg of the double ac the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club’s first totalisator meeting at Motukarara tomorrow.

Next Time made most of the pace in his race last week and he ran on very strongly when challenged over the last furlong. He did not have much to spare, but accomplished his task in the manner of a horse likely to extend his record at short notice. He is an acceptor for the Midsummer Handicap at Ashburton next Wednesday and needs to win tomorrow to be correctly placed. With luck in the running, he should take a prominent part in the finish.

Macklin, a most impressive winner at Kaikoura on October 29 at his last start, pleased by the manner in which he finished on in his race at the Methven trials on Tuesday. The Josedale Dictator gelding has plenty of ability and stays strongly. If he races up to his best, he will have bright prospects.

Zagar will be bracketed with Macklin. but he should be safely held by his stablemate. Zagar lost ground at the start of the Rangiora Cup last week and he was not afterwards a possibility.

Spaxton won convincingly over one mile and a half at Waimate on December 8. He will be meeting much stronger opposition at Motukarara but that should not trouble him. He, too. is well endowed with stamina and should give a good account of himself. If allowed to make his own rules in front, he will take catching. Gold Mist is long overdue for a winning turn. She has been placed

in her six starts this season, and with a little luck would have won long before this. The Light Brigade mare will only need to receive a reasonable run to be hard to beat. Cobina, Bracken Brae, and Bonnie Castle make most appeal of the remainder.

Chance for Bonny Venture Bonny Venture may gain her first win in the Second Waihora Handicap, the second leg of the double. The U. Scott—Belle Grattan mare paced a fine race for a close fourth in the Cheviot Handicap at Rangiora last week, two of those to finish in front of her being absent this week. She drew the second line last week and has again been unfortunate. However. she is usually reliable, and this is not expected to trouble her unduly. She should appreciate the mile and a half journey tomorrow, and it will be surprising if she fails to make a bold showing. Most opposition to her may come from Rene Lou, which was a good second to Next Time last week. Rene Lou has been placed in her last two

starts and she is due for a win. She has drawn No. 1 on the front mark tomorrow, and should be prominent I all the way. Floreate showed that she was on I the verge of worth-while form when she raced at Rangiora last week. That was her first start for some months and. after being handy throughout, she finished tenth, not far from the leaders, which crossed the line in a bunch. The run is certain to have improved her and she should be harder to beat tomorrow. Lord Argyle was solidly supported at Rangiora last week, but he could finish no closer than eighth. He is very fit at present and the furlong shorter distance this week may assist him to be placed. Buckaloo disappointed at Rangiora following a good second at Hororata a week previously. Buckaloo paced a sound race at the Methven trials last Tuesday and he may go close to reaching a place. Count Renaldo, which is making a f’-esh start. Toucher and Omega make most appeal of the others. Willowdale, a member of N. L. Eerkett’s team, made short work of his opponents in the Parnassus Handicap at Rangiora after making all the pace. If allowed to do the same tomorrow, he should w’in the Halswell Handicap. The distance of tomorrow’s race is one furlong less than at Rangiora and this should suit Willowdale. Placed at Rangiora San Jacinto trotted a fine race for second to Indiana in the two-mile Hurunui Handicap at Rangiora last week. He has finished second at his two most recent starts and is due for a win. He looks handily placed on the front mark at Motukarara, and with a reasonable run may extend Willowdale.

Indiana meets San Jacinto on 36 yards worse terms over a shorter distance this week, but this should not stop her taking part in the finish. The Indianapolis mare has a splendid style of trotting and as yet she is comparatively inexperienced. Later on she should graduate to a tight mark.

Lawsuit was a sound third in his race at Rangiora and the consistent Josedale Grattan gelding must again be respected. Medetta, second to Willowdale at Rangiora, requires a win earlier in the day to be correctly placed here. If started he will have bright prospects.

Reflective, Coming Down, and Dan’s Choice are others expected to race prominently. Britannia, which failed at Rangiora last week after racing over extra ground, is selected to win the First Waihpra Handicap. Britannia has a useful turn of speed and will only need a reasonable run to be the hardest to beat. Captain Free, which won at a recent trials meeting, looks to be near his best again. The Free Fight pacer has had a win from three starts this season, and if he begins smoothly tomorrow, he should take part in the finish. Elsinore showed speed in her race at Hororata earlier in the month when she finished seventh. If N. L. Berkett can make her begin smoothly, she will take catching. She has more ability than most in the race, but she is far from being reliable. Lady Vai, which is making a fresh start, showed ability earlier in her career. The sister to Overdrive could easily upset calculations. Black Gem, which has been placed in his last two starts, Springvale,] Marcina, and Siberia are others likely to take part in the finish.
