CUP CANDIDATES’ FINAL TRIALS

Impressive Gallops At Wingatui WATCH AND WAIT’S GOOD RUN •The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN. December 20. Sound cup trials by Watch and Wait. Field Chief. Silver King. Horatius and Exodus. and smart sprints by the Publicans’ Handicap candidates. Kasr-el-Nil. Copperfield, and Red Admiral, were features of the track work at Wingatui this morning, when the final gallops were held for the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting on Saturday. Her Ex was impressive in her run over five furlongs, and another Champagne Stakes contender in Black Star sprinted brilliantly over three furlongs. The best efforts on the plough were recorded by Hearth Rug and By Jove. The trials were held on the outside of the course proper, under ideal conditions. The track has completely recovered from the recent rain, and was hard •nd fast.

Watch and Wait (C. T. Wilson) was not extended to finish two lengths clear of Landon (L. W. Hare) at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-ssec. the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. The Count Rendered mare was galloping freely throughout and pulled up well. Field Chief (J. Didham). Exodus (G. E. Lowry), and Ma Reine (A. E. Didham) finished in line after running seven furlongs in a shade under Imin 33sec. Compared with Watch and Wait, the Didham horses were travelling faster over the early stages, taking 55sec for the last half mile, and 41 3-ssec for the concluding three furlongs. * Field Chief ran a mile and a quarter, •nd was joined by Exodus at the end of two furlongs. Ma Reine, a candidate for the James Hazlett Gold Cup on the sec* ond day. showed improvement on her effort on Saturday. The Wanderer (B. J. Anderton) and Mitre Peak (H. T. Anderton) over the same «round in Imin 21sec, the last three furlongs in 41sec. This time was equalled by Irish Wings (L. W. Hare), which improved on his trial earlier in the week.

Flying Symbol (L. Dawson) ran the opening three furlongs in 39 4-ssec, and came home in Imin 21 2-ssec.

Kasr-el-Nil (J. D. Pankhurst) was at a disadvantage in the weights when he finished on terms with Copperfield (A. H. Eastwood), at the end of half a mile in the smart time of 51 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 39sec. This time was equalled by Red Admiral (J. Didham), after taking 13sec for the opening furlong. Ettrick John (G. E. Lowry) ran half a mile in 52sec, the first furlong in 12 2-ssec, and these times were- equalled by Larboard Watch (J. Didham).

Salonica (M. Houliston) went over the same ground in 53 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Cadillac (R. J. Mackie) and Kalends (H. T. Anderton) were together in the same times. Surapt (R. J. Mackie) ran the opening furlong in 13 2-ssec, and came home weii in 53 3-ssec. The Resurgent colt has done well this week, and there is every chance that he will take his place in the field for the Champagne Stakes. Bonniboy (R. J. Mackie) was let off with an easy run in 55 4-ssec, the first furlong in 13 2-ssec. Royal Display (W. Gibbs) and Ditched (G. D. Lee) ran the opening furlong in 12 2-ssec, and completed the distance in 52 2-ssec.

Lucky Bill completed a round of pace work with a half-mile sprint in 53 3-5 sec. Frances Burn (M. Houliston) and Sea Wings (T. O’Brien) took 54 3-ssec, the first furlong in 12 3-ssec. Black Star (R. J. Skelton) showed speed to dash over three furlongs in 38 3-ssec, and had a length to spare from his stablemate. Peril (A. I. Powell).

Master Ascot (J. D. Pankhurst) and Ace High (S. Robertson) were together in 39 3-ssec. Master Ascot is a goodlooking half-brother by Massowa to the Auckland Cup winner Coaltown. Ace High is the first of the progeny of the good race mare. Social News.

King Robin completed a round of pace work by sprinting home from the three furlongs in 40sec. and similar tasks were given to Tarbillon, Bon Soir and Eden's Pride.

Her Ex (C. Wilson) soon opened up a lead on Moon-El-Nil (A. H. Eastwood) and was not asked to do her best to hold her advantage to the post. She ran the five furlongs in Imin 6 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Smart (S. Robertson) equalled this time when he finished a length clear of Count Aven (N. Hurring), and Master David (G. D. Lee» and Flying Doctor (R. J. Mackie) were not ridden out in Imin Bsec. the first two furlongs in 25 3-ssec. Masefield (B. Biair) and Royal Way (J. D. Pankhurst) were two lengths clear of Richmel (M. Milne) in Imin 8 2-ssec, the opening two furlongs in 26 2-ssec.

Prince Ermine, Central King (a halfbrother by Cassock to Sarkey) and Coster Boy were given an easj- five furlongs, and came home the last three furlongs in 42sec.

On the Plough By Jove and Hearth Rug were companions in an impressive trial over five furlongs on the plough. Hearth Rug (J. D. Pankhurst) was the first out. but By Jove (R. J. Mackie) was travelling nicelv to shade him in Imin 4 2-ssec. the last three furlongs in 39 4-ssec.

Cashmere (H. T. Anderton) pulled up well after two rounds of strong pace work. Other horses engaged on the first day of the meeting, which got through useful pace tasks, included Overboard, Uproar.
