Gongress At Lincoln College

The University Catholic Society of New Zealand will i hold its ninth annual congress at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, from January 18 to 21. The congress, which has not been held in Christchurch for eight years, is being organised by the Canterbury University College Newman Society in conjunciton with Dr. Vernon Griffiths and Dr. E. B. Reilly. This year’s congress was held at Paraparaumu. The theme of next year’s congress will be “Religion, Culture, and University Education.” The first lecture, “What is Culture?,” will be given by the Rev. E. A. Forsman. lecturer in philosophy at Auckland University College, on January 18. On Saturday morning, January 18, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce), will officially open the congress. This will be followed by a lecture on the breakdown of naturalism in English poetry by Professor J. C. Garrett, professor of English at Canterbury University College. In the afternoon the Rev. F. Durning, of St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, will speak on the university as a creation of medieval culture. This lecture will be followed in the evening by a dinner and a social. “The failure of the modern university to preserve and transmit modern culture,” will be the subject of an address given the following morning by the Rev. G. H. Duggan, of Rochester Hall, Christchurch. In the evening. Dr. M. Charlesworth, lecturer in philosophy at Auckland University College, will discuss the breakdown of Western culture. The final lecture on “The Reintegration of University Studies.” will be given on the afternoon of January 21, by Mr G. S. Troup, liaison officer at Canterbury University College. About 100 persons—graduates and undergraduates are expected to attend the congress. When it has ended nearly one-third of this number will go to Curious Cove for the New Zealand University Students’ Association congress.
