SHIPPING FOR N.Z. MEAT EXPORTS
DISCUSSION BY BOARD AND CABINET
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 20.
Shipping problems as they affect New Zealand’s meat export industry were discussed at a meeting of the Cabinet’s economic committee with representatives of the Meat Producers’ Board today. “It is difficult at this stage to assess the extent to which shipping "will be dislocated as a result of the closing of the Suez Canal,” said the DeputyPrime Minister (Mr K. J. Holyoake) later. Nevertheless, the situation was causing concern.
The board representatives had reported on the steps taken to ensure that adequate shipping would be available for meat exports, which would become heavy in February and March, he said.
Apart from Mr Holyoake. the Minister of Finance (Mr J. T. Watts), the Minister of Customs (Mr E. H. Halstead). and the Attorney-General (Mr S. R. Marshall) attended the meeting. The board representatives were Mr J. D. Ormond (chairman), Sir Walter Mulholland, and Mr A. B. Baker.
Mr Holyoake said the meeting was primarily concerned with shipping. No decision had been taken on when another meeting would be held. Other questions discussed were the marketing of New Zealand meat and administration of . the Meat Board.
