KNOCKED WOMAN DOWN
MAN FINED £l7/10/FOR ASSAULTS (Neto Zealand Press Association) MASTERTON, December 20. “Broken friendships cannot be handled in this way. It is indicative of the accused’s affection for the girl that he was prepared to knock her to the ground,” said Mr J. R. Drummond, S.M., in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court today, when convicting Edgar Wallace, a linesman, of Carterton. of two charges of assault. Senior-Sergeant J. G. Fitzpatrick said that the accused had been keeping company with a girl, but their friendship had been broken. He saw the girl at the interval during a picture show in the company of a youth, and went up to her and struck her, knocking her down. He pulled her up, and struck her again. A bystander, Dennis Bernard Munn, who had no association with the party, went to her assistance, and was struck twice by the accused. The accused later met Munn in the street and renewed the assault.
The accused was fined £7 10s for assaulting the girl and £lO for assaulting Munn.
