ROAD PATROLS IN HOLIDAYS

30 FLYING SQUADS TO BE USED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 20. “See and be seen’’ is the motto of the traffic flying squads which are to spearhead the Transport Department’s holiday accident prevention team. Backing up the flying squads will be micro-wave speed detectors, camera cars and night patrols, part of the extensive arrangements which have been made by the department to cope with the record traffic expected on all* roads. Announcing these arrangements today, the Minister of Transport (Mr W. S. Goosman) said that, again this year, the department had received ready co-operation from local authorities and the Army, which had made experienced men available for traffic duties. Traffic controls over the holidays will be substantially increased throughout the whole country. “This week-end, particularly on Friday and Saturday and Christmas Eve, will be the most dangerous days, when traffic will be heaviest and many drivers will be travelling long distances,” said the Minister. “Although every available traffic officer will be on patrol at these times, all drivers must co-operate by allowing an extra safety margin in their driving.”
