PLANS FOR £40,000 building ERECTION IN WELLINGTON The Press’* Special Service WELLINGTON, December 20. A _P ew . church is to be erected by the Dominion’s 2000 adherents of the Greek Orthodox faith on the site of jUj’P l ? !J lstin B Greek Orthodox Wellington country< in Ll °y d street, The church will be in the Byzantine style which originated in the third ?h? t r- ry O - Ut T? f tl ? e rei Sn of Constantine the Great It will be similar in exorlLaLappearance to Byzantine Greek orthodox churches elsewhere in the world. • A xr Gre £ k civil engineer now living in New Zealand and employed in the housing division of the Ministry of E* Sarris, designed the building, which will accommodate a congregation of 700. It will have four domes and a massive, cupola rising to a height of 57ft. Towering over the building will be a belfry tower which will extend another 10ft above the height of the cupola. The building Avill be 85 feet long and 55 feet wide. The cost of the new church is estimated at between £40.000 and £45.000 and the Greek community will shortly launch a campaign to obtain funds for the job. The church will be known as the Church of the Annunciation—the name of the existing church in Lloyd street. In line with Byzantine church tradition, the main church will take the form of a cross within the building. A balcony will be provided for women. Mr Sarris has lived in New Zealand for a year and a half. Since his arrival ir’ the country, he has also designed a larger Greek Orthodox church for the Greek community in Brisbane.
