BRITANNIA MEETS ESCORTS
Convoy Steaming At 14 Knots (From Our Own Reporter) H.M.N.Z.S. HAWEA. Dec. 18. With spray breaking over the bows, the Royal yacht Britannia came up to her two escorting frigates. H.M.N.Z.S. Pukaki and Hawea. shortly before ’midday today, 190 miles east of Lyttelton. The Britannia was sighted from the Hawea at 9.10 a.m. An hour and a half later the frigates, which had been steaming m line abreast, moved into line ahead, with the Pukaki in the lead. As the Britannia gained steadily the frigates changed course to take up escorting position on her quarters. 1000 yards away to port and starboard. In an east-north-easterly 20-knot breeze, the frigates were pitching steeply among the white-capped waves at 14 knots. Many of the 10 Sea Cadets aboard had their heads down today, but otherwise the crew were fit and looking forward to their voyase south to the pack ice—believed to be the furthest south any ship of the Royal New Zealand Navy has yet been.
