The Prime Minister (Mr Holland) flew to Wellington yesterday morning, and after attending to official-business returned by air to Christchurch. Mr Holland will not return to Wellington until after the Christmas holidays. Lieutenant-Colonel D. A. Caughley, the present Commandant of the Army Schools, Waiouru Military Camp, has been appointed deputy-head of the New Zealand joint services liaison staff in Melbourne. He will take up his new appointment next April. The new Army Schools Commandant will be Major P. H. G. Hamilton, at present G. 5.0.2 at Central Military Headquarters. Wellington.— (P.A.) Mr H. P. Smith was re-elected chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening. When nominations were called, he was proposed by several members.

Detective-Sergeant A. B. Tate, of the Criminal Investigation Branch of the Christchurch Central Police Station, has been appointed an instructor at the Police Training School, Trentham. He will take up his new duties early in the New Year. Sergeant Tate has been stationed in Christchurch since he joined the Police Force in 1937. He transferred to the C. 1.8. in 1945 and was promoted to detective-sergeant in 1948. Mr L. W. Penrose, who has been assistant manager of the Christchurch branch of the Bank of New Zealand for the last year, has been appointed manager of the Wanganui branch and will take up his new duties at the end of January. He succeeds Mr A. L. Johnstone, who is retiring after 42 years’ service. Mr Penrose joined the bank at Christchurch in 1927, and before his recent managerial appointment here was accountant at Dunedin. Mr M. C. Esson. accountant at Hamilton for the last two years, will succeed Mr Penrose at Christchurch. He has been with the bank since 1930. and before his appointment to Hamilton in 1954 was accountant at Taumarunui. He previously served at Picton and CromwelL
