EXPORT LAMB COMPETITION
entries from all PARTS OF COUNTY
WIDESPREAD interest IN JUDGING
A feature of the Mid-Canterbury genual district competition in export fat- lamb held by the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association at Fairfield freezing works yesterday’-was the representation of breeders widely Spread from all districts in the Ashburton County. Usually entries have come from areas accustomed to breeding relatively early lambs. The com-< petition, which is part of the South Island competition of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, reached a high standard, but not quite as good as that of last year when the average weights of lambs was lighter. There were 132 entries in the competition. compared with 103 entries last year, and the competition attracted widespread public interest More than 600 persons attended the field day at the works. Entries this year were more uniform in type than last year, said the judges Messrs G. C. Lennox and A. E. White (supervising graders for the Meat producers’ Board) and D. C. Miller (supervising grader for the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company. The chief fault this year, they said, was excess fat on many entries. an J some were rather bare on the shoulders. A pleasing feature in this year’s competition was the more suitable range of weights of the exhibits, there being only five overweight lambs in the whole competition, the judges said. They considered the large number of entries revealed an increasing interest in the competition by producers. The best individual lamb, a South-down-Romney cross entered by Mr D, C. Butterick (Dromore) possessed beautiful shape and make, and was ideally suited for butchers, said Mr Miller. The awards were:— New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board trophies for best pen of lambs judged on the hooks: G. R. Copland, Tinwald (Southdown-Romney, 321 b, 331 b) 1: W. J.
