RACING Win For Pilot Light In Southland Guineas

The Kurdistan three-year-old, Pilot Light, beat the hot favourite, Liban, in the Southland Guineas, the feature event on the second day of the Southland Racing Club’s centennial meeting today. Pilot Light trailed Liban to the straight, and after a slow run the first half-mile, he outsprinted Liban in the run in.
Pilot Light gave the Hazlett stable its second success in the Guineas, which it had won earlier with Test Flight. Besides Pilot Light. Mr W. E. Hazlett's colours were successfully carried by Tut Tut. who completed a double for the meeting, and the two-year-old Kelp, which beat the favourite, Surapt. in the Bluff Handicap. Desert Cloud came in for confident support in the Century Handicap, the first leg of the double, but she was in trouble with half a mile to run and finished weh back. The winner was Cheerio, which outstayed Patris after a hard finish between the pair. Cheerio was handily placed all the way. and after he and Patris had headed the pacemaker, Marjo, at the straight entrance, he got the better of Patris with 50 yards to run. Obelisk finished particularly well to be a neck back third.
Marjo immediately raced to the front, and at the mile was two lengths clear of Desert Cloud and Cheerio (together). with two lengths to Obelisk, Garoloch and Sawdust in line. Marjo was four lengths clear into the back, but at the half he had only a length to spare from Desert Cloud, Cheerio and Patris (in line), with a length to Obelisk, ahead of Dinner Chat and Sawdust. Patris and Cheerio had headed Marjo at the straight entrance, with Dinner Chat handy, ahead of Obelisk, with two lengths to Desert Cloud, under pressure, ahead of Armando and Garoloch.
Cheerio and Patris fought out the finish, with Cheerio doing the better to win by a neck. Obelisk came home well to be a long neck back third Dinner Chat was fourth, four lengths away, with a gap to Armando, clear of Desert Cloud and Garoloch (together). Marjo followed, with Sawdust last.
Kelp Beats Surapt The McLean Stakes winner, Surapt, was backed down to odds on in the Bluff Two-year-old Handicap, but just as he had the result in safe keeping. Kelp flashed up on the inner to beat him by a neck. Kelp is a half-brother by Beaumaris to two earlier two-year-old winners in Sea Pen and Bobbie Burns, being out of the Neptune mare. Sea Flower.
Gold Creek swung round the wrong way at the start, and Sea Rock also lost some ground. Top Flight again began brilliantly, being clear at the end of a furlong from Black Ray, Jet Flight and Surapt (in line), with Kelp, Incandescent and Sea Buoy next. Top Flight was still in charge at the straight entrance, with Surapt challenging and Jet Flight putting in an appearance ahead of Incandescent, Black Ray and Kelp. Surapt had headed Top Flight inside the furlong, where Incandescent challenged and Kelp put in his claim on the inner. Kelp finished best to get up and beat Surapt by a neck, with incandescent a length and a half back third, and Top Flight half a length away fourth. Black Ray was right up next, with four lengths to Jet Flight, ahead of Barana and Sea Buoy. Southland Guineas Liban was backed down to odds on for the Southland Guineas, but he had his colours lowered by Pilot Light, who trailed the favourite to the straight and sprinted him home to win well. There was little jjace on in the early running, the field sprinting home the last half-mile in 48 4-ssec. Believe Me lost about four lengths at the jump out, and Salonica was also slow away. Liban was smartest to get under way, and he led Pilot Light and Mitre Peak past the six, with a length to Salonica and a length to Believe Me. Pilot Light had the measure of Liban at the furlong, where Believe Me challenged on the outer and Mitre Peak had little room to work in. Pilot Light came on to win easily from Liban, which held off Believe Me by a nose. Salonica was half a length back third, with half a length to Mitre Peak. The Second LegPlunder capped off a string of placings by winning the Dr. Menzies Handicap, the second leg, for whicn he was sent out a firm favourite. Plunder and Sydney Wake were the first to show out, and at the mile they were closely attended by Devon Downs, Pitlochry. Jollishah and Meadow Gold. Jollishah raced clear at the six. but Meadow Gold had headed him at the five. Meadow Gold was joined by Pitlochry at the half, where Jollishah, Plunder. Hunt the Slipper, Rex Robe (moving up). Silver Spring and Channel Flight, ahead of Allan, were in close order. Pitlochry had worked clear at the three, and he was followed into the stright by Plunder Meadow Gold, Rex Robe, Allan, Hunt the Slipper and Jollishah, ahead of Devon Downs. i Plunder had the measure of PitI lochry beginning the final furlong, and he came on to win decisively by three-quarters of a length. Meadow Gold got up to beat Pitlochry by a long neck for second, with Rex Robe a length and a quarter away fourth. Silver Spring was half a length back, with Meadow Gold, Hunt the Slipper and Devon Downs in line, ahead of Southern Call, Cocos, Sydney Wake and Jollishah. Win for Nairnbridge Nairnbridge beat the milers in the Invercargill Handicap after he had trailed Wayren to the home turn and headed him at the straight entrance. Wayren led Nairnbridge into the back, with Cornflake, Rathkeale and Accountant handy, ahead of Skylight. Wayren was clear at the half, but he was joined by Nairnbridge at the home turn.
Nairnbridge had charge at the straight entrance, with Wayren. Cornflake, Accountant, Landon. Skylight and Rathkeale next. In the run in Nairnbridge always had the upper hand, and he carried on to win by a length and a quarter from Rathkeale, which got up to beat Cornflake by a head for second. Landon was a length and a quarter back fourth, three lengths clear of Spring Night, with four lengths to Skylight, ahead of Canasta and Wayren. The meeting ended on a successful note with a good attendance. The weather was fine and the track fast. The totalisator handled £32,546 10s. There was no meeting last year for comparison. The winning double, Cheerio and Plunder, paid £l2 Is 6d for £l. J. A. Wilson, trainer of Aquarius, was charged under rule 247 with having entered the horse for the Mossburn Handicap. The conditions of the race stated that horses that had not won a race at a totalisator meeting at the time of nomination were not eligible. The charge was sustained and Wilson was fined £25.
Surapt (J. D. Pankhurst) was standing at the back of the stall when the barrier was released in the Bluff Two-year-old Handicap, and lost several lengths. Gold Creek was sideways on, and took no part in the race. W. D. Skelton was fined £lO for breaking a riding engagement for Cornflake in the Invercargill Handicap. Equipage, winner of the second division of the Lumsden Plate, and Plunder, winner of the Dr. Menzies Handicap, were swabbed. Results:—
