BOROUGH POLLS
RICCARTON COUNCIL UNCHANGED
LYTTELTON MAYOR RE-ELECTED
All the sitting members of the Riccarton Borough Council were reelected on Saturday. The ninth candidate for the eight seats, an Independent, Mr J. A. Brown, was almost 35C votes behind the last sitting councillor to be returned, according to the initial count.
In Kaiapoi borough, where the Labour Mayor (Mr N. E. Kirk) was returned unopposed for a second term Labour has increased its grip on the council though an Independent candidate, Mr H. L. Oram, again topped the poll. Labour won seven of the nine seats on the council. Previously it held five.
Mrs A. O. Williams, one of the first women to seek office in Kaiapoi, was placed twelfth. In Rangiora borough a new candidate, Mr W. H. O. Alford, topped the poll for the council, and on the initia’ count two sitting councillors, Mr C. S Ayers and Mr W. G. Nairn, have been defeated. Mr Ayers is only 15 votes behind for the last seat on the council New councillors include Messrs P. J K. McKie and D. A. Farr. Mr Farr is leading Mr Ayers. Mr F. G. Briggs was re-elected Mayor of Lyttelton with a majority of 322 over the Independent candidate. Mr J. B. Collett. About 1450 electors voted from a roll of 2331. Mr Briggs has been Mayor of Lyttelton for the last eight years. Labour won an extra seat on the council to hold six seats against the Independents’ three. The five sitting members of the council who contested the election were all re-elected. A 1 the fop of the poll was Captain A. R Champion, an Independent sitting member, who had a comfortable lead over Mrs Gladys E. Boys (Labour)
