MAYORALTY OF DUNEDIN

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, November 18. The sitting Mayor of Dunedin, Mr L. M. Wright (Citizens’ Association) yesterday gained a landslide victory over his Labour opponent. Mr M. Connelly, and became the first Mayor in the city’s history to be elected to a third term. Mr Wright had a majority of 6261. He polled 15,362 votes. The Citizens’ Association will control the new Dunedin City Council. All its seven candidates were provisionally elected at yesterday’s poll. The Labour Party gained five seats. Before the election, the Labour Party held seven seats. The City Council poll was topped by Mr T. K S. Sidey (Citizens’ Association), with 13,549 votes. Mrs E. E. McMillan, M.P., who was the only woman candidate, was top Labour nominee. Citizens’ Association candidates filled three of the four city seats on the Otago Harbour Board. The last chairman of the board, Mr W. R. Clarke, who stood as an independent this year, was bottom of the poll. The sitting Mayor of Port Chalmers, Mr T Anderson, was displaced by Mr J. S. Thorn. St. Kilda’s Mayor, Mr A. H. Finnie, was returned for a third term.
