REEFTON MEETING TODAY

County Fermanagh Favoured

County Fermanagh found the class too ’ good in the Riccarton and Jockey Club j Handicaps at the New Zealand cup meet- - ing, but his prospects are better for the ‘ County Handicap, principal event at the ’ Reefton Jockey Club’s spring meeting > today. » At his last start before the cup meet- | ing County Fermanagh was an impressive winner of the mile Douglas Handi- ' cap at the Westport Jockey Club’s meetf ing last month. Although he has been rehandicapped 211 b for that, he is still 81 k above the raised minimum in today’s event. His prospects of gaining his third win for the season appear bright. • Chellene has failed in each of her four ‘ starts since she narrowly won the Colvin i Handicap on the first day at Westport. - Her displays at Riccarton earlier in the ■ gave the impression that the - Revelation mare has temporarily soured - of racing. • Moilynn, a winner on the course last • season, may be a better prospect. Moilynn was placed twice at Westport last ' month, and although his two perform- ' ances since have not been impressive, he ' is a capable galloper on his day. He could test the top weight. The two bracketed members of the Walsh stable, Jesse James and Peter Bruce, raced consistently on the West Coast last season, but they will be making fresh starts, and may be in need of a race. Lights On and Skyzami, which complete the field, are now well into the veteran stage and do not appeal. Arabian Stream, Boissier Boy, and [ Coppowa have been scratched for the ; first leg of the double, the Antonio’s Hack Handicap, in which Kelman, Dellar. and Almay are expected to run prominently. Gay Tommy is the only defection in the second leg. the Springs Hack Handicap, for which the Washdyke-trained mare, Dellar. will probably be favourite ■ Most opposition for Dellar may come ! from Almay, a winner at her last start. and Skyrain, runner-up to Cruising in the Menzies Hack Handicap at Westport. Civisions May Be Avoided Boissier Boy. Mimbar, Coppowa, and Gay Kinena will be missing from the P-lacks Point Novice Stakes, and -a further scratching will allow the event to be run as one race. If the race is run in two divisions. Giltspur, twice runner-up to Sturmer at Westport, and Hunter’s Praise, a place-getter in three of her four starts this season, will probably be the respective favourites. Moilynn and Post Card are likely to be well-supported candidates in the Blackwater Hack Handicap, with the Riccar-ton-trained Sturmer, a dual winner in maiden class at Westport last month, most favoured of the rest. The scratching of Mimbar on Thursday leaves a field of five runners in the Reefton Hack Handicap. Arabian Stream, the outstanding hack at the Westport meeting last month, appears to have an excellent chance of gaining his third successive win. Scotch Emblem, which finished third and fifth respectively in the high-weight events on the latter two days of the cup meeting at Riccarton, may be Arabian Stream’s strongest opponent. There were light showers in Reefton yesterday, but with prospects of fair weather today the track, which dries out quickly, should be in good order.
