PHYSIOTHERAPHY FOR LEPERS

NEW BUILDING PLANNED ON MAKOGAI

The New Zealand Lepers’ Trust Board is erecting a building on the Pacific leper station island of Makogai to house physiotherapy equipment provided by the board some time ago, according to the board’s secretary (Mr P. J. Twomey). The equipment has been temporarily housed in the X-ray building which, with its equipment, was also provided by the board. Both physiotherapy treatment and X-ray diagnosis are now essential services in the treatment of leprosy on Makogai, according to Dr. V. W. T. McGusty, a former director of medical services in the South-west Pacific, who visited Makogai recently. “It is only the ingenuity of the sisters in charge that has enabled both services to be carried out in conditions of gross overcrowding that are unavoidably wasteful and time-consum-ing,” he said.
