METRES OR FEET AT OLYMPICS?

The Olympic Games Organising Committee has decided that it will adhere to the Olympic principle that metric measures must be shown on the scoreboard. Melbourne spectators had a sample of this during the recent Australian athletic trials and there was some confusion in appreciating the merit of performances. In one event, by the time the officials had completed the conversion from metric to British distances, the actual third place getter was shown as having jumped further than the winner. With tapes available that have both metric and British measures marked on them, there should be little difficulty in officials giving results in both measures and having them boll, posted on the result board. It is reported that the scoreboard contractors would have no difficulty in providing the dual result, but so far the organising committee has not asked for the extra space to be added.
