THOUGHT FOR FOOD
Had the demands of the inner man been sufficiently met last week, it is possible that Peter Thomson might have lowered the record for the Australian Golf Club’s course at Sydney by more than the one stroke. Thompson established a new course record of 66—six under par—when playing in the Pelaco tournament. After this round Thomson complained that he had been forced to play on an empty stomach. He hit off at 11.2 a.m. and Inished just on 2.30 pjn. At 1 pjn. he began to feel hungry, but he still had six holes to play. It was an established fact that no golfer could turn on his best on an empty stomach, he said afterwards.
His figures for the round seem to add weight to his contention. In the first 12 holes he scored seven birdies, but in the last six he could do no better than par figures. On three occasions he narrowly missed putts of a length which he found little difficulty in sinking in the first half.
His complaint brought results, however. For the remainder of the tournament sandwiches and other snacks were available at the tenth tee.
