PROPOSED SINKING OF TEST WELLS

A project to sink wells in Hagley Park to serve as permanent observation wells for the measurement of static water levels in the various aquifers underlying Christchurch has been supported in principle by the Waimairi County Council. The cost of the wells, it is proposed, will be shared by the local authorities concerned. A report from the technical committee on ground water research, received by the council through its works committee, said that about six wells to depths of 100, 200. 250. 300 400 and 500 ft would be needed. They would be small, and without screens, and the method of sinking them would be such that as much information as possible about the rock penetrated would be obtained. The report suggested that each local body should make an inventory of the wells in its territory, and that representative wells should be selected ] for periodic observation.
