EGYPT
Sir. —The answer to Mr Wheeler’s question. “Just where were the Russian forces poised for the Egyptian invasion?” is contained in an article in this morning’s edition by Sir David Kelly (former British Ambassador to Moscow). To quote: “The Soviet Union can have had no motive for supplying arms to Egypt (and on a larger scale than is generally realised) than that of encouraging an eventual war of annihilation against Israel.” It now appears obvious that the British and French action has halted an Arab attack on Israel with Russian backing. This would have resulted in Russian influence in areas which vitally affect the Allies’ economy. However pleasing this may be to pro-Russian factions. the idea of a Russian-controlled Suez Canal (in defence of which hundreds of New Zealanders died) must be repulsive to any realistic New Zealander with his country's interests at heart.—Yours, etc., FACTUM lUSTUM EST.
