EAST EUROPE

Sir. —In agreeing with “No Bias,” I would like to add that for years revolutions and rebellions have been going on (South America is a good example). Why so much sympathy for our former enemies, Fascist Hungary? Have we such short memories that we forget the magnificent battle the Russian people fought against the German invaders, and of their scorched earth policy, etc., while the same Hungarians were in Russia murdering civilians. My opinion is that there are far too many Fascist and religious elements in Hungary creating unrest, and before wasting too much sympathy on these Fascists, who would be at our throats again, given the chance, let us realise there are two sides to every story.—Yours, etc., LEST WE FORGET. November 16, 1956.

Sir, —Mr Wheeler asks who supplied arms to the Hungarian revolutionaries. I would like to ask why they should be called that. Surely not because they wanted to rid their own country of a fungus. One can imagine how it ate into their souls, working for and being dominated by the Russians. President Eisenhower said Sir Anthony Eden committed an error. Could not he see the action of a brave man? It certainly took courage, I quoto: “When all men doubt you.”—Yours, etc., ROSE OF ENGLAND. November 16, 1956.

Sir.—l did not mean to suggest that the Hungarians, or any other country, let the Communists into their countrv in one big horde. The Communists are much too cunning for that. I quite agree with “A.M.” as to their evil methods of gaining control of a country. If the Hungarian rising was the work of Fascists, which I don’t believe for one moment, is it possible that Fascism could be half as evil and cruel as Communism has proved to be? I think not, and I believe the Hungarians do not wish any part of Communism, but want to live their own way of life, which they have a perfect right to do. I think the way the Communists are treating the Hungarian people has proved that Communism is the most evil thing the world has known. They should be banned in all countries.—Yours, etc., NEW ZEALAND BORN. November 15, 1956.
