INTOXICATED DRIVERS

Strict System In Scandinavia

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. November 16.

A new method of tackling the problem of the intoxicated driver has proved successful in Norway and Sweden, where it is an offence for a driver to have more than a certain alcohol content in the blood. Mr G. G. G. Watson, a Wellington barrister, who recently returned from the United Kingdom and the Continent told members of the British Empire Society that the percentage of alcohol permitted was no more than that in one whisky or one pint of beer. If a driver exceeded that amount he was sentenced to 20 days’ gaol and his licence was automatically forfeited. At parties and social functions he had attended in both countries no guest would take more than one drink unless he intended to take a taxi or had a friend to drive him home. “It is a drastic measure, but effective,” said Mr Watson.
