BOARDING-HOUSE CHARGES
INCREASES MAY BE MADE SOON
Christchurch boarding-house keepers do not seem to be increasing their tariffs as quickly as those in Wellington, after the recent general wage increase. In Wellington rates have gone up by as much as 12J per cent, since the 5 per cent, wage increase, but most proprietors in Christchurch said that they had not yet considered increases. One, however, said that his tradesmen had already increased their prices, and he could see no other way but to step up his charges. Potatoes were prohibitive at £8 a sack, he said. Others were inclined to follow a “wait and see” policy, and there maybe some increases within the next month or two. No increases had been contemplated by r the Canterbury University College Council at either Rolleston House or Helen Connon Hall, said the rector (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn).
