ACQUISITION OF GASWORKS
Sir,—The proposed bill seems to be a clandestine attempt, on the part of politicians, to mix gabble and realities, on the usual assumption that taxpayers are always at hand to pav for nolitical fantasies. What is behind this bill? Simply, that gas. as gas only, is actually not worth bothering about, and can be given away for nothing. But most emnhatically. that is not so with chemicals, extracts and by-pro-ducts generally which originate at gasworks. I know what is on the go concerning this in other countries. How many in isolated New Zealand do? Politicians in New Zealand—to take the case of electricity only—have priced this necessity out of all reason Quite the usuql thing with all Staterun elephants! Any fool can spend money, but a policy of “quid pro quo” is much overdue in New Zealand 1 legislation.—Yours, etc.. POUND STERLING. October 18, 1956.
