AUSTRALIANS WIN AT WESTPORT

GOLF

TOOGOOD ROUND IN SIX UNDER PAR (New Zealand Press Association) WESTPORT, October 2. In spite of quiet rain which set in after lunch and to a certain extent marred the golf, some brilliant play was seen by the large gallery following the Australian amateurs, H. Berwick, W. Edgar, J. S. Seward, and P. Toogood in their singles matches against a combined Nelson-Marl-borough-Buller-West Coast team on the Westport Golf Club’s Kawatiri links at Carter’s Beach this afternoon. The course standard par of 72 was beaten handsomely by Toogood, who stroked an immaculate 66. Berwick also adapted himself with ease to the slower greens as the rain began to take effect and was round in 70. Toogood’s score included six birdies. He was out in 32 (35) and home in 34 (37). Toogood beat his opponent, Fowke, of Nelson, at the thirteenth, 5 up and 3, but they carried on to complete the course. With rain then falling more heavily, the Australian completed his splendid round with a four at the five par last hole. Berwick was extended by K. Smith, of Nelson, for most of the way after being 2 up early in the game, but the Australian finally won. 3 up and 2 to play. W. Edgar always held the Greymouth player, T. Pfhalert safely and won, 4 and 2, and J. S. Seward, after a bad start, beat J. Brown, of Westport, 4 and 3. The foursomes this morning resulted: — gdgar and Toogood (Australia) beat rown and Pfhalert (Combined), 8 and 6; Berwick and Seward (Australia) beat Smith and Fowke, 3 and 2. These games provided some attractive golf, Berwick and Seward being two under par when their match ended at the sixteenth. TAI TAPU GOLF CLUB. LADIES’ OPEN TOURNAMENT, Tuesday, October 9. Entries close Thursday, October 4, with Mrs B. M. Calder, 26 Hillary crescent. Upper Riccarton. ’Phone 45-297. —Advt.
