SIZE OF SOVIET NAVY

“Fleet Now Second In World Strength”

(Rec. 10 p.m.) PHILADELPHIA. September 21. A group of NATO officers reported yesterday that the Soviet Union had m 10 years risen from seventh to •econd place among the world’s navies. The NATO group, headed by ViceAdmiral James Tach, of the United States Navy,, said in a report to the Convention of the American Association of Port Authorities that the Soviet Navy had 25 modern cruisers. 139 up-to-date destroyers, and a fleet of 400 ■ubmarines. The officers said that the Soviet Union was completing three new submarines every two weeks to add to its present fleet.

In addition, the Soviet strength was backed up by a shore-based naval air arm of 3000 modern jet fighters and light bomber craft. The fleet was exceeded only by that of the United States, the report said. Other members of the group included Major George Courtice, Royal Marines. Lieutenant Arne G. Lund. Royal Norwegian Army. LieutenantCommander Robert Sagnial, of the French Navy, and Mr J. S. H. Rodman. a London lawyer.
