FACIAL ECZEMA LOSSES

SURVEY OF WAIKATO SHEEP FARMS (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, September 21. The big financial loss to the sheep industry as a result of facial eczema has been revealed in a special survey arranged by Waikato Federated Farmers in collaboration with the economic survey of the Meat and Wool Boards. On 587 farms in the Waikato, 61,635 sheep died from the disease in 1955 and another 45.786 sheep were slaughtered because they were infected. A reduction in the lambing percentage was estimated at 17 per cent, as a result. On the 587 farms surveyed this represented a shortage of 107,500 lambs. The financial loss on the survey farms is assessed at £617,000, or £1057 a farm.
