SALE OF APPLES TO HAWKER
GROWER FINED AT NELSON (From Out Own Keporter) NELSON. August 24. Three charges of selling apples to other than the New Zealand Apple and Pear Board, as prescribed by the act, were preferred against Edward Herbert Stephens, of Stoke, in the Magistrate’s Court at Nelson. The charges involved 94 cases of apples which had been consigned by the defendant to a hawker at Westport, where the apples had been resold. When interviewed, Stephens had stated it was reject fruit and that he was unaware that its sale was governed by the act. It was orchard run fruit, but otherwise was in good condition, said Mr W. G. Smith, who prosecuted If offered it would have been purchased by the Apple and Pear Board. The apples had been sold for 6s a case, and then sold by the hawker for 20s to 24s a case. Regarding it as not a serious case of its kind, the Magistrate, Mr J. D Willis, S.M.. fined Stephens £3 on each charge.
