U.S. CHAMPION MARE TO GO TO STUD
Stenographer, one of the greatest mares in trotting history m the United States, has been retired to the stud. Only a five-year-old. Stenographer won 154.750 dollars. placing her fourth on the list of money-winning trotting marcs. Those o{ s , }? r ,. are Proximity. Goldsmith Maid, and Katie Key. Proximity was reaf eight-year-old. Goldsmith Majd at 17. Katie Key, which is nine, is still racing. No filly has ever come close to Stenographer’s total of 123,741 dollars at two and three. She was chosen "Horse of the Year in 1954. when she had 11 records for two and three-year-old racing to her credit. The most important of her record honours werefastest two-year-old trotting filly, 2min Isec: fastest three-year-old trotting filly, Imin 59 l-ssec; fastest three-year-old filly in a race. Imin 59 4-ssec; and the fastest two-heat race for three-year-olds. regardless of sex. and the fastest two-heat race for mares, regardless of age. 2min 0 3-ssec, Imin 59 4-ssec. These records still stand. As a two-year-old. she won 16 races and 58,603 dollars, a record for a fillv of her age. She won 23 races the following season for 68.620 dollars. Stenographer is regarded as one of the greatest bargains in trotting history. She was purchased as a yearling by Mr M. Hemnt for 2500 dollars. By Bill Gallan. she is out of Follow Me. which took a record of 2min 6sec as a three-year-old.
