SCHOOLS’ MATCH CHRISTCHURCH BEATS OTAGO After an indifferent start. Christchurch Boys’ High School scored a decisive win ovjer Otago Boys’ High School by 18 points to 0 on Saturday The annual match between the ’schools was played as the main curtain-raiser to the test match at Lancaster Park, and perhaps the vast size of the crowd was partly responsible for a lower standard of Rugby than is usually provided by these schools.

Both sides made many attempts to play open and constructive football, and there were some bright movements and quick changes in the initiative, but some of the passing was not sufficiency quick and the handling generally was sometimes at fault For the first half of the first spell Otaeo looked the stronger and more finished team, and it had much the better of the play to that stage. But the Christchurch forwards gradua’ly asserted a superiority and their backs made better use of the opportunities which came their way. Two of the best backs on the field were the right wings. W G. M. Kirkland, of Otago, and P. J. Morrissey, of Christchurch. Kirkland had very few chances, but did everything asked of him capably, and he showed himself to be a strong and determined runner Morrissey was also little more than a spectator during the first spell, but in the second he showed speed and judgment much above the average. He scored Christchurch’s last nine points with three very fine tries. He was favoured twice by the bounce, but his pace and anticipation took him to the right nosition to score. The Christchurch flank forwards often had the Otago inside backs in trouble, but M. J Aim, the Otago full-back, showed an excellent sense of position and played soundly until he was injured in the second spell The Christchurch halfback. M. J. Heslop. played a useful game and scored a very neat try in the first spell. Otago’s forwards started very well Indeed, but faded just enough for Christchurch to get on too. However, R. B. Cathro. J. H. Keddell, and R. Thomson were particularly industrious throughout the game. The capable Christchurch pack was often led by R. Hartland. W. A. Clark, and R. B. Dailey, with the number eight, N. M Todd, covering much ground effectively.

Christchurch led by six points at the interval, with a penalty goal by R. Fronting, and a try by Heslop. Fronting kicked a second penalty goal earlv in the second goal, then Morrissey scored his tries. Otago had five or six attempts to kick goals, all of them unsuccessful. The referee was Mr J. P. Malcolm.

AUCKLAND BEATS TARANAKI (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 19 The Auckland Rugby team on Saturday played brilliantly to beat Taranaki by 40 points to 9. Everything was in favour of bright, attacking Rugby The turf was reasonably firm, the sun shone throughout, and a gusty breeze did not offer any great assistance to either team. A crowd of about 8000 was rewarded with some of the best Rugby that Auckland has played since 1947-49. Auckland's tries were scored by D F Menzies (2). L. C. Russell (2). D. J Graham (2). T R Lineen, A. Pryor, and R. F McMullen S. Dyett converted five tries and kicked a penalty goal. H. Scown and W. Orr scored tries for Taranaki, and W. Cameron kicked a penalty goal.
