OFFICERS’ CLUB BALL

500 AT WINTER GARDEN About 500 guests from all parts of Canterbury and from many districts in the South Island attended the annual ball of the Canterbury Officers’ Club, in the Winter Garden last evening Women members of the social committee had been busy during the day decorating the ballroom, lounges, and supper tables. In the lounges and alcoves they used pink spring blossom combined with pale pink camellias, and in the ballroom two large arrangements of artificial holly, tied with scarlet ribbon, stood on tall white pedestals on the orchestral dias. Two replicas of the club\ coat of arms were also on display. The supper table decorations, which were much admired by the guests, were white troughs of narcissus, mimosa, trumpet daffodils, and yellow daisies with blue yellow-throated irises. Silver trifle-stemmed candelabra and crystal candlesticks held lighted orange candles. The guests specialy invited to attend included Commander J. D. Keay, Director of Reserves. Navy Office. Wellington; Captain J. N. Allan, officer commanding H.M.N.Z.S. Pesasus, and Mrs Allan; Brigadier J. T. Purrows, officer commanding Southern Military District, and Mrs Burrows: Captain P. Phels, president of the Otago Officers’ Club, and Mrs Phels; Groun Captain F. R. Dix, officer commanding the R.N.Z.A.F. Station. Wigram, and Mrs Dix; Mr H. S. Feast, the Town Clerk, and Mrs Feast.

They were received by the president of the club (Captain E. R. Rastrick) and Mrs Rastrick. Mr*. Rastrick wore a frock of Royal blue silk velvet with a flowing skirt. Guipure lace trimmed the off-the-shoulder neckline of the fitting bodice. Members of the social committee were Captain A. T. TT . Rose. Lieutenan‘ Commander I. D. Bennetts. Major E. T. H. Taylor. CURRENT NOTES

Mrs Jean Glass returned by air yesterday from Melbourne, where she has been visiting her son-in-law and daughter. Dr and Mrs J. N. R. Crawford. Travel films were shown by Mr Roberts at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi Plunket Mothers’ Club Mrs Grimshaw presided. Competitions were won by Mesdames Allen, Fenwick. Hopkins. Hamilton, and Dixon. An evening party was held recently to celebrate the first anniversary of the St. Martins Plunket Mothers’ Club. Mrs Slater presided. The birthday cake was cut by Mrs Sullivan, president of the Plunket Mothers’ Club Council Items were given by Mrs Hanover and Mrs Ellis. A talk on diet and exercises in relation to health was given by Mrs G. L T.eversedge to members of the Home Economics Association at their recent monthly meeting. The sum of £6 15s was collected for the South Island hostel for the blind. Miss E. D. Killner who presided, appealed for gifts for the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Save the Children Fund.

A “Fathers’ Night” was arranged recently by members of the Shirley branch of the League of Mothers Other guests included members of St. Columba’s Men’s Fellowship. Mr D. Short and Mrs J. Hitchen showed a film of the Y.M.C.A. world conference held in Paris and slides of their journey across the United States. The programme included competitions, items by the choir and drama groups, duets by Mesdames Cossins and Forne, and saxaphone solos by Mr N. R. Henderson. The Rev. A. W. Baxter expressed thanks for the fathers.

Films taken by Mr P. B. Watts on his tour of 59 countries as world president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce were shown to members of the Christchurch branch of the Timaru High School Old Girls’ Association at an evening meeting held at the home o f Mrs Watts. The president of the branch (Mrs J. L. Norton) welcomed Mrs Pitcaithley. Mrs A. H. Rothenberg, and Mrs J. Roy Smith, of Federated Old Girls, and representatives of the following kindred associations: Avonside, Christchurch. Christchurch West. Waitaki. Otago, Southland, and Nelson Girls’ High Schools, Rangiruru. St. Margaret’s. Craighead, and Columba Colleges.
