Antique Dealer’s Fast Deal
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON. August 14. An American stranger walked into |Mr Walter Bird’s antique shop in ! Kensington Church street, had a look I round, and said: “Say, mister, what will you take for. the lot?” i Mr Bird did some quick thinking. ; named a figure, and a minute later j held the American's cheque for the j full amount. I “You could have knocked me down I sideways.” said Mr Bird afterwards. i He later learned that the American. I Mr George Gottfried, of New York. ; had done the same thing in another | antique shop in a nearby suburb. I Mr Gottfried explained to him that |he had antique shops in New York i and New Jersey and that last January ' he had bought the stock of one shop lin Sussex for £lB,OOO.
