ACCIDENTS WITH RAIL-CARS
Headlamps To Be Lit In Day Time WARNING TO SURFACEMEN OF APPROACH (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 14. The headlamps cf rail-cars and diesel-electric locomotives are to be lit in the daytime to help to warn railway surfacemen of their approach. The council of the Automobile Association (Wellington) learned thi*= when it received a copy of a letter sent by the General Manager of Railways (Mr A. T. Gandell) to the North Island Motor Union. The union had suggested that if rail-cars were painted in more striking colours they would more easily be seen when approaching level crossings.
Mr Gandell said it was difficult to suggest a colour scheme that would contrast more readily than the present red with the varying backgrounds through which rail-cars had to pass, and still retain its distinguishing appearance after action by the weather. Additional information, however, was being sought on the subject. Referring to the lighing of headlamps during the day. he said that some American railways had adopted this practice, and it was claimed that its introduction had reduced crossing accidents.
