CHILD ATTACKED BY STRAY RAT
DEATH IN HOSPITAL AFTER ANESTHETIC (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 12. There was no suggestion of neglect by the parents, said the Coroner (Mr A. D. Copeland) today at Otahuhu, when closing the inquest on Robert Whiu, a month-old Maori baby, who died in Middlemore Hospital on May 21, after having been bitten by a rat whilst asleep at his home near Kaikohe. Mr Copeland said police inquiries showed the parents maintained a high standard in living conditions, the house was spotless, and there was no rub bish lying about to encourage vermin The sleeping child appeared to have been bitten by a stray rat, which was starving. There was no negligence on the part of the parents. Mr Copeland found that death was due to the effects of haemorrhage and middle ear infection following an anaesthetic for surgical repair of extensive face injuries inflicted by a Tat.
