YOUTH CHARGED WITH SERIOUS OFFENCE
SEQUEL TO ATTACK ON MARRIED WOMAN (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 12. A plea of not guilty by John Kereone. aged 18. a labourer, at the end of evidence against him in the Auckland Police Court today on a charge of assault with intent to commit rape, disconcerted both prosecution and defence. “Those instructions are different from what I had from my client,” said Mr K. C. Aekins. and the Court adjourned for a time so that he could consult Kereone. When proceedings resumed, Mr Aekins said he consented to a week’s remand so that another police witness could be called. Mr J. W. Kelly, S.M., allowed the remand, but refused bail. The charge against Kereone followed an attack on a married woman at Glen Innes on the night of June 27. Detective-Sergeant T. J. Keoghan said that two days after the attack he saw Kereone, who admitted striking the woman. Kereone said he “rabbit-killed her on the neck.” Later he made a written explanation. To Mr Aekins. witness said accused was of a low educational standard. It appeared he would not know the seriousness of his act. •
