CHILDREN PRACTISING IN HAGLEY PARK OBJECTION BY RESERVES DEPARTMENT The reserves department of the Christchurch City Council has forbidden two schools in the Golf Foundation scheme to practise on an area in North Hagley Park. This was reported to the management committee of the Canterbury Provincial Goll Association by the secretary (Mr G. W. A. Green) last evening. The committee decided to seek a clarification of the department’s objections to practice and to ask if arrangements could be made lor such coaching to be held on a suitable day and under proper supervision. A deputation will wait upon the department if necessary. Mr Green reported that he bad received a telephone call from Mr C. Clements who was coaching the Christ’s College boys under the scheme, that the boys concerned had been advised by notice that they could no longer practice or play golf on an area in North Hagley Park. He later received another telephone call from Mr J. Clements, the coach ot the St. Margaret's College girls, who had been given similar advice. Be had got in touch with the council and the information he had received was confirmed, said Mr Green. The only reason given for the prohibition was that playing or practising golf on any reserve was not permitted and that the Christ’s College boys could practice on their own grounds in South Hagley Park. The area used at present was on a football field at the Riccarton road entrance to the park, he said. The president (Mr H. M. S. Dawson) said it was difficult to understand why the council objected. The coaching was properly supervised and those receiving tuition were not just hitting balls anywhere. Pre-National Tournament The committee adopted the recommendations of the match committee for a pre-national tournament to be held at Christchurch on October 6 and 7. The tournament will be purely for amateurs as it was considered that most of the professionals m Christchurch would be playing in the Caltex tournament at Paraparaumu on those days. The tournament would be over 72 holes with separate 36 hole events for each day. The lowest handicap players will be divided into grades. Mr Green reported that Cromb and Merritt. Ltd., had offered to run a schoolboy and schoolgirl tournament during the August holidays, and suggested this be held on one day. over 36 holes. The firm had offered to provide all the trophies and cover the expenses and run the tournament. After discussing the offer in committee for several minutes, it was decided to congratulate the firm on its offer, to find it a suitable date and to assist it to obtain a course. The committee decided to send a congratulatory telegram to Peter Thomson, who won his third successive British open championship on July 6. RUSSLEY LADIES’ CLUB.— Foursome knockout: Mrs L.
