FENCING

OLYMPIC TEAM NOMINEES FURTHER PROVINCIAL TRIALS The Canterbury Provincial Fencing Council is to hold two special trials to determine whether additional nominations should be made for the Olympic trials to be held in Wellington on September 1 and 2. This was decided at a meeting of the council last evening when the president (Mr N. M. West) said that the New Zealand Association had altered its ruling on the eligibility of nominees. The association’s new rule says fencers who are considered to be capable of defeating any of the original nominees may be nominated in addition to those whose names have already gone forward The nominees must have proved themselves at provincial trials. From the nominees of all provinces, eight men and eight women will be chosen by the selectors to attend the national trials. The recast nominations must be made by August 1. No more money had been raised towards the council’s quota of £lOO required to send a New Zealand team to the Olympic Games, said Mr West. In an effort to raise the £75 still needed a raffle is to be run and drawn in time to have the money in hand by August 1, the final date set by the association. “We ’pin our faith in a bag of potatoes,’’ said Mr West
