FAREWELL TEA AT HOWARDVILLE

PRESENTATION TO MISS HOWARD

Residents of Howardville, Burnham, many of whom have lived there since it was opened at the instigation of Miss M B. Moward, M.P., then Minister of Health, in 1949, were entertained at a farewell tea at Howardville last evening. As a token of gratitude to Miss Howard, two women residents presented her with a 1000-day clock, a China “cat orchestra” and a china dog. from the elderly folk who had, until yesterday, made Howardville their home.

This morning, the 73 residents of Howardville will leave for their new homes at Churchill Courts or Langford House.

"Howardville was a dream I had from 1943. which came to fruition six years later,” Miss Howard said. “Many elderly people have passed through Howardville, but most of you here tonight are original residents and we have had some very happy times together.”

The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane. M.P.) and Mrs Macfarlane. Dr. A. Douglas, chairman of the Howardville committee, officers of the Health Department, Mr and Mrs E. Dunstan. ■ supervisors of Howardville. as well as former residents and staff members and entertainers, who had frequently visited Howardville, were present at the high tea.

Each resident was presented with a monetary gift from the Howardville canteen fund, before leaving.
