THIEF AT BEACH RESORT

FAILURE OF POLICE SEARCHES

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. July 1

While police were searching heavy bush behind Piha on Friday for a thief who has raided about two dozen baches at Karekare and Piha, their quarry was making merry inside a bach owned by Mr T. H. Pearce chairman of the Auckland Rugby Union.

Mud on the floor of the bach suggests that it was broken into on Friday and occupied overnight. The thief cooked a meal cf baked beans, drank three-quarters of a bottle of whisky, and took four bottles of whisky and two of gin away with him. The intruder broke three windows before finding a way into the main living area of Mr Pearce's bach.

Mr Pearce estimated that the intruder lit more than 100 matches before he found candles to conduct his search for food. A broken torch was left on the floor. Police believe the unknown raidei is armed with a light rifle and a shotgun stolen from Karekare recently.

Every day and night, police parties are patrolling bush paths and searching some of the most difficult country in the Auckland district.
