Australia is short of young single women migrants. s There are about 130.000 more single me ? than £ irls in Australia and the Immigration Department ana other organisations are concerned at this growing social problem. Parents in Europe are’ reluctant to allow their single daughters to come to Australia alone. Some Governments even forbid the emigration of single girls unless they ar ®. en^a ?ed and their fiances are willing to put up a monetary bond. Very few single women have come out from Iron Curtain countries, although there have been many thousands of men.
Nearly 40.000 persons—the largest number for six years—arrived in Australia to settle permanently during the first three months of this year.
