Mr and Mrs F. A. Siegert and their son, Mr Kevin Siegert, will leave by air on Monday for Singapore, where they will join the Tegelberg for a visit to Hong Kong, Manila, and Japan. They expect to return to Christchurch early in September.
Miss Gillian Maturin, of Christchurch, who was appointed to the temporary position of one of Sir Winston Churchill’s private secretaries a year ago, is still on his staff. She is one of two secretaries who spend most of their time working with Sir Winston Churchill at his country home, “Chartwell,” in Kent. She has been taken twice to the south of France with his party, and returned recently from a five-day visit to Germany, where Sir Winston Churchill was presented with the Charlemagne prize.
Mrs N. Naude, Of South Africa, is accompanying her husband on the Springbok tour of New Zealand. Her husband is providing a commentary in Afrikaans bn each match for the South African Broadcasting Company. Mrs Naude is a teacher at a large Government secondary school for girls at Johannesburg. She also coaches in hockey. She has played hockey for the North Transvaal provincial team and won her colours for hockey at Pretoria University. The annual meeting of the Riccarton Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs W. Milne Shand, the patron. Mrs C. G. Manhire presided and congratulated the club on its activities, and thanked the speakers and demonstrators for their help during the year. Officers elected were:— president, Mrs Manhire; vicepresidents, Mrs R. Sarjeant and Mrs T. Uren; treasurer. Mrs H. Duckworth; secretary, Mrs W. L. Whittington- committee, Messrs K. Scott. V. Phillips, G. Simpson. N. Steel and J. Barrett. Winners of competitions for the year were Mesdames R, Sarleant, J. Gardiner, and D. Smith. In her report to the monthly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society, the charge sister (Miss B. HeHiwell) said that the nurses had visited 1n45l n 45 babies in their homes during the month, and 3423 babies were attended at the rooms. There were ?87 new babies. The matron of Karitane Hospital reported that 15 mothers and 25 babies had been admitted to Karitane Hospital during the month, and 14 mothers and 27 babies had been discharged. One set of twins had been admitted. The president (Mrs A Rose) presided at the meeting. A talk on colour in the spring garden was given by Mr M. J. Barnett at the monthly meeting of the Godley garden group of the New Zealand Pioneers and Descendants’ Clyb. , thirty-fourth birthday party of the Riccarton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held recently Mrs H. Griffiths presided and welcomed guests from kindred organisations. Musical entertainment was provided by the Riccarton Townswomen’s Guild.
Miss E. D. Killner presided at the June meeting of the Home Economics Association. A programme of songs and instrumental items was provided by the Glee Club of the Brmdwyr Country Women’s Institute, under the leadership of Mrs E. N. Roberts. Solos were sung by Mrs Beck and Mrs Matson, a monologue was given by Mrs Davies, a piano solo by Mrs McDiarmid, and piano d”et by Mrs E. N.- Roberts and Mrs McDiarmid. The proceeds of the sales table were given to the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association.
At a recent meeting of the Mother’s Union evening group at St. Mary’s Church. Merivale, Mrs E. Bowie welcomed Mrs E. A. Gowing as the future enrolling member, and also wished her happiness on her forthcoming visit to England. Mrs W. W. Averill prenl de d welcomed 10 new membere. Miss Church spoke of her work for the Society for the Protection of Women and Children in Christchurch. The duties of women police officers were outlined by Constable R. Sterritt at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Central Townswomen’s Guild The sum of £6 10s 5d for the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association was contributed bv members at the meeting. Mrs E. B. Kay and Mrs H. Blick were appointed delegates to the annual council meeting to be held in Hastings in September. Reports were given by circle leaders and delegates to organisations.
An interesting talk on cosmetic surgery was given by Mr J. J. Brownlee at the monthly meeting of the Catholic Nurses’ Guild. The hostesses were the Sisters of Calvary. Miss P. Dudderidge presided.
